Babel - The Center of Unity
Genesis 9:1  And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.

Following the flood, God made a covenant with Noah found in Genesis chapter 9. This covenant is what Bible teachers refer to as the Noahic covenant. While we will not be covering the Noahic covenant in this article, it is a rather interesting study.
If you ever wonder why a duck or squirrel or any wild animal is afraid of you, it is found in Genesis 9:2.

Gen 9:2
And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.

Getting back to the point of this study. We are going to be studying the Tower of Babel. Since the world is striving for unity now more than ever, it is important that we understand the roots of world unity. Is unity, in general, a bad thing? No! Christians that unite together for a good cause is noble. A country that unites for the greater good of their society is noble. A county that unites to free another country from tyrannical rule is noble. But the unity found in Genesis, chapter 11, is a unity that is in direct rebellion against God and His commandment and this is a grave sin. If all peoples of the world were to come together in unity to worship the One True God of the Bible and to believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior and come together as Christians, there would be a wonderful unity!

We know from prophecies in the Word of God that the opposite will be true. The heart of mankind is evil and desires a world without God. A world that does not answer to God's authority.
A world that does not come to God by faith but rather by sight. This is why the antichrist is going to be a "big hit" on the world scene. The antichrist will conquer the world by peace. The world will see this "peace" with their own eyes. It will be a psuedo peace for three and a half years.  This "peace" will especially be present in Jerusalem and in Israel.  The Antichrist will claim to be God and the world will worship him because of the miracles that will be performed by him and the False Prophet. The world desires a unity that can only be achieved by abandoning the Bible. Abandoning God and all that the Bible teaches. Where did the idea of world unity come from? Let's go back to the origins:

Gen 10:8
And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.
Gen 10:9
He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.

The Hebrew word for
"mighty" is the word:

It means powerful; by implication warrior, tyrant.

The Hebrew word for
"Hunter" is the word

It means to lie alongside (that is, in wait); by implication to catch an animal (figuratively men.)

The name, Nimrod, means
"Let us rebel."

"Nimrod became a "mighty tyrant in the face of Jehovah." He was a hunter in the sense that he was implacable in searching out and persuading men to obey his will. The Jerusalem Targum writes: He was powerful in hunting and in wickedness before the Lord, for he was a hunter of the sons of men, and he said to them, Depart from the judgment of the Lord and adhere to the judgment of Nimrod! Therefore it is said: As Nimrod the strong one in
hunting, and in wickedness before the Lord." -
Taken from The Genesis Record by Henry M. Morris

"It was he who attempted to bring together the human race after the Flood in an effort to get them united into a nation of which he could become the great world ruler. He was the rebel, the founder of Babel, the hunter of the souls of men. He was the lawless one, and he is a shadow or type of the last world ruler, the Antichrist, who is yet to appear." - writes
J. Vernon McGee

Genesis 10:10 says
"And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar." This indicates a
large metropolitan area; a complex of cities that would be centered around Babylon, the capital.

Gen 11:1  "And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech."
Here is the key to unity. If everyone understands each other, it is so much easier to accomplish their goals. They all spoke the same language and the words they spoke were united for the same cause. "We all have the same
goal here."

Gen 11:2
And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
So as they started on their journey, they found a plain and decided to dwell there rather than journeying on further. The City of Babel is the first record
of a strong centralized society. A self sufficient civilization that was no longer dependent upon God for anything. The devil was planting things within the minds of the people as they journeyed toward Shinar. It started with a thought of rebellion and then we hear their words...for out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

Gen 11:3
And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
Here is the unity beginning, "Let us make brick." Bricks were used because
of convenience. There might have been stone nearby but to quarry it out would have taken a long time and they seemed to be in a big hurry to build
this city as we will find out as we read on further.

Gen 11:4
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose
top may reach unto heaven; and
let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

"Lest we be scattered..." seems to infer that they knew God's Will was for them to replenish the whole earth.

Here again, in unison, "Let us build a city and a tower."

Let us build a city = a center of unity- headquarters
Let us make a name = overwhelming ambition
Tower= religious symbol - a focal point of the political and religious life of the people.

The tower exposed the arrogancy and rebellion of man against God. This reveals the ambition and ultimate goal of building the tower. They wanted to reach heaven. We, today look at their efforts as such utter foolishness, that they could actually build a tower that would reach heaven.  Back then, it was the "in" thing to do.
It is always man in the present looking back at history that can make the statement "What were they thinking?"

Unfortunately, man living in the present is driven by ambitions that are later proved to be futile. They cannot see the end of their days. They are blinded
by ambition. They learn nothing from history and they repeat it over
and over again. The greed and pride overtake them and they are blinded so much that they cannot see their lurking doom.
World War II proved this saying to be true. The Germans blindly followed their insane leader and
in their arrogancy refused to see their fatal doom lurking on the horizon. Today, most would say "What were we thinking?" But at the time, the Germans got caught up in the "in thing." They looked to a man to save their country. They looked to a man to conquer lands and give them a name.
They were united for the cause. They were together. They thought they
had a great leader. They invited the mentality "let us conquer, let us build,
let us make a name." The people cheered and adored an insane man, driven
by hate, lust, greed and power.

Gen 11:5
And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower,
which the children of men builded.

God descended to see the city that they built. It could have been that God actually took on the appearance of man and actually walked in the city to get on their level. The Bible does not say how the Lord came down to see but
this is one possibility.

Gen 11:6
And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have
all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

Another translation could be, "Behold, the people are united and have a
united language and are weakened and made sick to accomplish this."  Was God afraid that they would actually reach heaven? That is an obvious NO! God confused their language
for their own good. Had not God intervened,
it would have been the Days of Noah all over again.

Picture the scenario: These rebellious, foolish people listening to demonic spirits would have spent their whole life building this tower, in an effort to reach heaven, which they could never possibly reach, thus wasting their lives away. They would have built cities all around the capital of Babylon and
never would have ventured any further. They would have
become evil again, just like the days of Noah. Evil loves company. Corrupt people corrupting others and becoming more and more corrupted by exchanging evil, rebellious ideas and becoming more sinful as the days went by until they would have exceeded the evil that was found before the Flood. In all of the stress and "rush-rush" of the people, they would have had no chance to seek God or to even hear from God for that matter.

When there is quietness, God can work on the heart.
The devil's job it is to distract people from looking to the One True God. The devil had the people of Babel, building cities, tower, a name, etc. The devil distracts the world and keeps them busy, working, religious as long as they never have the time to think about their soul and as long as they never come to Jesus Christ. The world is in a prison and the only door out of the prison is Jesus Christ. Jesus said, "I AM the Door." The devil watches the door and does everything within his power to keep people from realizing that there even is a Door. He has painted those prison walls with all kinds of attractive fleshly vices and religious pictures and icons. The people do not even know that they are imprisoned but their heart is empty. They go from room to room in the
prison, sinking deeper and deeper within the walls. The heart longs for the
joy that only Jesus can give. Only Jesus can fill the heart with joy and only
He can give the person a new life.

Gen 11:7
Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language,
that
they may not understand one another's speech.
God did this for their own good. It was His mercy upon them. Notice the
"Let US go down..." Here, we have another verse that coincides with
1John 5:7:
"For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one."

Gen 11:8
So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the
face of all the earth: and
they left off to build the city.
God originally said to man after the Flood, "Replenish the earth." Man said
to each other, "We are not going to scatter and replenish.
We are going to
get together and stay together and build a city and a tower so that we
will never be scattered." DIRECT REBELLION against God's command.
This city was intended to be the rallying place for mankind. Nimrod desired
a world empire that was in direct opposition to God.

Gen 11:9
Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD
did there
confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did
the LORD
scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
The confounding of the language definitely
slowed the progression of evil down. It did not obliterate it because man has a free will. Man can choose
God or reject Him. God did not create us to be robots.
He wants us to love Him of our own free will. The confusion of tongues is a miracle that only God could do and He did it for their and our sake, for the preservation of mankind. The inability to communicate with one another must have been
very confusing and frustrating for the people. Their thoughts and motives
were still the same but yet they could no longer accomplish their goals.

God did this out of His love and mercy toward them. The City of Babel and its surrounding cities would have progressed and men would have been made slaves, if they were not already, and it would have been so terrible for all people living within the city, except for the rich leaders
in charge. Nimrod was the father of primitive Communism.

After God confounded their language, each family became a tribe and were scattered to their
intended destinations. Had they done what the Lord commanded them to do from the very beginning, we would have never had
to learn a foreign language. We all would have spoken the same language.

The Tower of Babel was supposed to be the symbol of their unity and strength. Instead,
it is forever a testimony to the foolishness of man, the futile ambitions of man. The mercy of God was displayed by destroying the plans of these evil, foolish men to further preserve the future of mankind.

Today, we have men playing on the same words. Let us make brick, let us build, let us make a name, let us a make a tower. The internet has united man like nothing ever before. We have online language translators that can translate our words into so many other languages. We have satellite TV, radio, internet, chat rooms, faxes, emails, etc.
We have ousted God from the classroom, the courtroom and from the European government's constitution. We have religious leaders forsaking their beliefs and compromising their faith for the sake of unity. We have leaders all over the world compromising their countries sovereignty for the sake of unity and the better good. We have unified trade agreements. We have worldwide efforts and peace treaties.
Yet the world is still looking for answers. The majority does not want God. They abhor the God of the Bible and biblical principles.

The people of the world want a man, tangible, in front of their eyes that they can aspire to and look up to and eventually worship.
A new Nimrod, aka Antichrist, who will possess the very qualities that Nimrod possessed. A strong leader, a hunter of souls, a man of vision, a man of answers, a man of peace, a man who will appear to be an angel of light. A man who will appear to be the promised Messiah, that if it were possible, the very elect would be deceived. Thank God, the elect will not be deceived, for they will be taken out of the earth as promised by Jesus in
Revelation 3:10-11,
"Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon
all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.  Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown."

As Nimrod's plans were brought to nothing, so the antichrist's plans will be destroyed as well. The Bible says:

Daniel 11:45
And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.
Dan 8:25
And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.
Dan 7:26
But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his
dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.

What will the future be like with the antichrist ruling the earth for seven years?
Jesus said in Matthew 24:21-22,
"For then shall be great tribulation, such
as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened."

God again is concerned about the future of mankind. God will intervene and return to make all things right upon the earth. Jesus, God in flesh, shall return to set up His kingdom and His kingdom will never be destroyed.

Rev 19:11
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he
that sat upon him was called
Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
Rev 19:12
His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
Rev 19:13
And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his
name is called
The Word of God.
Rev 19:14
And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
Rev 19:15
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and
he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Rev 19:16
And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

Daniel 7:22
Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.
Dan 7:27
And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the
kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the
saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and all dominions shall serve and obey him.

Jesus will rule and reign on this earth someday. He will set all things right. There will be peace and safety for the inhabitants of the world. They will no longer live in fear. It will be paradise. Jesus will restore all things.

In conclusion, God gave each and every one of us a
free will. That is His gift to us. Sadly, man has chosen to reject God and His principles. Man needs the Lord Jesus Christ but man instead wants his own will to be done rather than God's will.  God is allowing man to do what he wants to do but He will only allow it for a season. The Lord gives man time to repent. God is patient and slow to anger and merciful.

Sadly, man says, "I will make bricks, I will build a city, I will build a tower, and I will make a name for myself."  The world says, "Let us make bricks,
Let us build a city and a tower, Let us make a name for ourselves. Unity at any cost. Forsake your beliefs for the greater common good."

Luke 12:16  And he [Jesus] spake a parable unto them, saying,
The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
Luke 12:17
And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do,
because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

Luke 12:18
And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and
build greater; and there
will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
Luke 12:19
And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid
up for many years;
take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
Luke 12:20
But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall
be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
Luke 12:21  So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

Life is but a drop of vapor and then it is is gone. All the world's riches and
vain ambitions...for what? For a piece of history which bears your name on
it? For a pot of gold that will melt in fervent heat? For money that your children will spend once you are gone?

You cannot take anything with you when you leave this world! Where will
you be 100 years from now? Do you know?
Have you received Jesus as
your personal Lord and Savior?
Your time may be up tonight. Today might
be your last day upon this earth! Do you know the Lord? Are you sure that you are on your way to heaven? Be sure. Do not pass the Lord Jesus by.
Receive Him as your Savior today!

Jesus said in Mark 8:36-37, "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?  Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?"

Jesus said in John 10:10, "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

Jesus said in John 3:17-21, "For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.   And this is the condemnation, that light is come
into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.   But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God."

Jesus said in John 12:46, "I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness."
