| Luke 1:30-33 "And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. " Matt 1:21 "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." We have all heard the sermons in which preachers say: "Christ said..." "Christ did..." "Christ is..." But they hardly mention the name of Jesus. That is our Savior's name. Many of the messianic ministries simply refer to Jesus as "Messiah said..." "Messiah did..." "Messiah is..." Is it so hard for preachers to say and preach the name of the Lord Jesus? Apparently it is. Acts 2:38 "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." I listen to Oliver B. Greene's sermons, from years ago. That man lifted up the name of Jesus Christ. He was not ashamed to say the name of Jesus. The name of Jesus just flowed from his heart into every sermon he preached. He did not candy coat things. He preached Christ Jesus with authority. 1Cor 1:2 "Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: " Years ago, songs were written with titles such as: "What a Friend We have In Jesus," "Jesus paid it all," "Give it all to Jesus," "Jesus, lover of my soul," "Jesus is the Sweetest Name I know," "Jesus on My Mind," "Tell It to Jesus," "Victory in Jesus" Nowadays, those great songs would be entitled: "What a Friend We have In Christ" "Christ paid it all" "Give it all to Christ" "Christ, Lover of My Soul" "Christ is the Sweetest Name I know" "Christ on My Mind" "Tell It To Christ" "Victory in Christ" Acts 8:12 "But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women." If I have a dentist named, "Dr. Smith" and I keep on calling him, "Dentist" or saying to people, "Oh, go to Dentist... he will fix your teeth. Dentist did a great job on my crown. Dentist is a nice man..." What is missing here? I have completely depersonalized my dentist. I should have called him, "Dr. Smith". Or at least I should have referred to him as, "My Dentist." Dentist is what he is and does but Dr. Smith is his name. Christ is our Lord's title but when we speak of Him, we should care to mention that He is the Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 5:40 "... when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. " We are to go and preach in the name of the Lord Jesus. Baptize converts in the name of Jesus. Demons even have to come out in the name of Jesus Christ. There is power in the name of Jesus. Acts 16:18 "....Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour." The world does not like the name of Jesus. One that is preaching Jesus is made fun of. But many popular evangelists who just say, "Christ..." are welcomed around the world. Acts 4:18 "And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus." Act 8:35 "Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus." That is just one example of the trend among preachers lately. Many of them do not even mention the name of Jesus. They say, "Christ" this and "Christ" that and I find it grievous in a way because the Lord Jesus when addressing the Apostle Paul or the Book of Revelation referred to Himself as "Jesus". I realize that the epistles in the New Testament address Jesus many times as "Christ", which means Messiah but the epistles also say "Christ Jesus"..."Jesus Christ"... "Lord Jesus Christ"..."Our Lord Jesus Christ"..."the Lord Jesus Christ." Phil 2:10-11 "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. " We have softened that powerful name of Jesus by just constantly referring to Him as "Christ." The world swears and cusses "Christ" and it is harsh to hear. It is equally harsh to hear over and over again "Christ" this and "Christ" that in sermons without any mention of our Messiah's name. [Remember too that the New Age Movement uses "Christ" in their literature. Their "christ" is not the Lord Jesus Christ! But with the one-world church uniting...a generic "christ" is their aim. ] It is almost as if Christians are ashamed of the name of Jesus and have deleted the personal closeness of who Jesus is. Maybe I am the only one who feels this way but it is something to think about. Email us with your input about this subject. Christ/Messiah is who Jesus is. He is Messiah. He died for us and rose again and He is our Savior! And Jesus is His name! Christ Jesus, Himself, says the following: Rev 22:16 "I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. " Act 9:5a "And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest:" Act 26:15 "And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest." If you know the Lord Jesus personally, you call Him by name! If you know Jesus personally, you boldly preach in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. When you pray, pray to the Father in Jesus' name. When you are in trouble, do you say, "Christ, I ask you to help me"? No, you address Him as the "Lord Jesus." For that is His name. Call His Name Jesus!
