PRAYER

When we have fellowship with the Lord, all the other things in our life will be aligned properly. Living the Godly Wifestyle means that we must put Jesus first and our marriages will flourish, our children will be blessed and all the details of our life will be in their proper order.

Psalm 42:8
Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.

Without a prayer life, we simply don't have a life. Prayer is where we meet God-- where we commune with Him. These days, worship is most emphasized in the church and we should worship the Lord by singing praises to Him but we must above all things--pray without ceasing. Now one might say, "How is this possible?" Well, prayer is a lifestyle-- it is the attitude of one's heart.  It means to know that God is ever present with us and in knowing this, talking to Him, spending time with Him and involving Him in our everyday chores of life. Example:

You are in a grocery store. Obviously, you are not going to pray out loud and kneel on the floor. You would look rather silly and they could even lock you up. Rather you enter the store and in your mind, you ask the Lord to help you with your shopping list. That He would lead you to the good items. That He would be with you and would protect you from evil. Prayer is an attitude of making our requests known unto God and asking Him what He would have us to do. We ask Him to lead us and guide us and we ask Him, "Lord, what can I do for you?" and then blessing Him with our thanksgiving.

Phil 4:6-7
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.   And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Prayer is asking the Lord, "What can I do? How can I best serve You? Show me those things in my life that are not pleasing to You. Show me my heart that I might confess my sins unto You. Help me to be the best wife, mother (etc.) I can be to my family."

When our prayer is answered, we know beyond a shadow of doubt that it is God who heard and answered our prayers. As the song goes, "If I never had a problem, I would not know that He could solve them. I would not know what faith in God could do."

PRAYER AND FAITH GO HAND IN HAND

Prayer is a time of talking to God, acknowledging our faith in Him-- not for His benefit but for our own. When we pray, we are asking God for our request and when the prayer is answered, we know beyond a shadow of doubt that He was the One who answered it. We serve a great and mighty God-- fully capable of handling any problem that we have. It is when we go to Him and lay our burdens at His feet, understanding that He is God and believing that He can do the impossible.

Job 42:2
I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.

Mark 11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

Now, does the above verse mean that I can pray for a BMW and God will give one to me? No, and here is where the prosperity preachers do err with the above verse. James 4:3 "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." (For more information, read our article called Laying Up Treasures.) As children of the King, we are supposed to set our affections on the things above and we are supposed to pray according to the Father's will in all matters. Taking all bible verses and rightly dividing the Word of Truth gives us the answer:

PRAY ACCORDING TO THE FATHER'S WILL

1John 5:14-15  And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

I cannot emphasize how important this is. God knows what is best for us and if we truly trust Him with all of our hearts, knowing that He works out all things for our good, then we must pray for the Heavenly Father's will in our lives. Our prayers should always be, "according to your will O Lord." Solomon did not ask for riches or worldly things. He asked for wisdom so that he might best lead God's people. Yet God granted him untold riches because his heart was in the right place in asking for wisdom.  We, as Christians already have a wealth of riches in heaven and we are commanded by the Lord Jesus to lay up our treasures where moth and dust cannot corrupt them. We are also told to ask for wisdom from God. James 1:5  If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. This wisdom is greatly needed in our daily life. The Lord will grant to us wisdom in dealing with all matters of life-- we need only ask Him. The world is a cruel place with dishonest people with ones that will steal your money, joy, patience, etc. We need to be filled with the wisdom that only God could give us so that we may best help our families and safeguard our families against the ways of the world.

BELIEVE GOD

Jam 1:6
But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
Jam 1:7
For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
Jam 1:8
A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

When we pray, we must believe God. Asking in prayer and believing go hand in hand. We must put our trust in the Lord- that He knows what is best. As we pray more, we will find our lives to be much more fruitful -- in tune with what God would have us to do. We will grow closer to the Lord and closer to one another as we seek the Lord's face and trust in Him to help us throughout our days.

Col 4:2
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

Psalm 27:8 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.

The Lord Jesus must come first in our lives. As we keep Him first and honor Him, the woman of Proverbs 31:30 will emerge to become the helpmate for our husbands that Lord intended us to be.

As we begin this study, it is VERY important to make sure that you know Jesus as personal Savior and Lord. If you have not believed on the Lord Jesus Christ and received Him as your Savior, click here to read about God's Free Gift of Salvation.

Many christians have the attitude, "well, why do I have to pray?" Prayer is not for God's benefit. Prayer is for our own benefit. It's when we utter the words to God that we fully understand our need of Him. We put our full trust in Him and give Him our burdens. It's a wonderful thing to pray for something and have our prayer answered. But how would we know that it was God who answered our prayer if we did not pray to Him? How would we know our own needs if we did not talk to God about them?  See, God knows our needs before we ask Him but when we make our requests known unto God, we are putting our requests into His hands. We have a free will and as we cast our care upon the Lord, we find that He cares for us.
